Holiday
in a Paradise ... a spell which has been
repeating for more than hundred years. It
was the Belle Epoque and Grand Hotel Victoria
was living its maximum splendour.
The great English, German, Russian families
came down from Engadina followed by huge
trunks, luggages, and hat-boxes in big coaches
which stopped in the service area in front
of the hotel.
The domestic staff was lodged in a special
wing, while the rest of the building received
guests with its luxurious wide stair-cases,
its liberty-styled chandeliers, its rooms
decorated with stucco works and golden decorations.
It was the beginning of a long holiday season,
which lasted even three or four months for
some rich families and during which the
holiday idleness alterned with sport and
excursions.
Today wind-surfing and water skiing have
taken the place of old rowing boat-races,
but at the Grand Hotel Victoria the atmosphere
of a hundred years ago is still present,
thanks to a shrewd renewal work, which has
faithfully preserved the style. The building
offers 53 rooms (wereas a part of the hotel
is used as a residence) were you can stay
having pleasure in the ospitality of the
staff.
