COMO
Full day excursion
The city of Como lies at the extremity of the south-western branch of
the lake, in a particularly strategic geographical position close to the
Swiss border town of Chiasso.
It is the capital town of the lake and also the capital of the province.
The province of Como lies in an area of 2,067 sq kms of which 67% is mountain
area, 28% hills and just 5% flat land. There are 246 councils under Como's
authority. The city was founded by the Romans in 196 BC and is now an
important commercial and industrial centre as well as a tourist spot.
Nowadays it is particularly important for its flourishing silk trade,
both in design and print of the fabrics. The Villa Erba, in Cernobbio,
is the venue for international trade fairs and exhibitions.
Como boasts a superb Cathedral, the greatest monument of the city in Gothic
and Lornbard-Renaissance styles. The Cathedral was the last of the Gothic
Cathedrals built in Lombardy, started in 1396, ten years after the starting
of Milan's Cathedral and finished in 1744. The facade is the work of Rodari.Beside
the Cathedral is the Broletto, a 13th century construction that was the
ancient seat of the council, with its civic tower. Behind Como's Cathedral
is the Piazza Verdi where one can admire a modern building by Terragni,
a Rationalist Architect (1932), considered to be a fine example of Italian
Rationalist Architecture.
Other interesting monuments that Como offers us is the Basilica of Sant'
Abbondio (1050-95) with a stylistic peculiarity of Norman origin - the
double bell-tower. |
