Laricola was the antique name given to this
wanderful place by the Romans. The name was
then changed during the II century in Garbatona
when Garbato, the heir of the local lord Garibaldo,
fell in love with the beautiful celtic princess
Jona (Tona in the local tongue). The new name
was choosen to seal their union. During the
centuries the name was then changed in Garbadona,
Grabedona and finally in Gravedona. During X-XI
century the entire area was part of the Milan
County. |

Maybe for this reason Gravedona was allied with
Milan during the war with Como (1100). Famous
in the area is the phrase Federico Il Barbarossa
said after the local soldiers sacked his cargo
ships, sailing the lake to nord "I forgive everyone
except the perfidious Gravedonesi". XIV century
was characterized by peace and prosperity under
the "Signoria Dei Visconti" dominion. |
Wars
and internal feuds between rich clans ruling
the village are part of Gravedona history. The
Gallio Palace, symbol of the village, was build
by Tolomeo Gallio during XVI century. A total
of fourteen churches with the beautiful S.Maria
Del Tiglio and the S.Maria Delle Grazie complete
its cultural heritage. Unfortunately only a
few ruins and the "Pracastello" belvedere remains
in remembrance of the antique castle destroied
during the war between Como and Milano (XI-XII
century). |

Absolutely
breath-taking is the big fireworks show held
each August the 14th. Gravedona has a wide sandy
beach on the lake, near a big sporting area
with an open swimming pool, three tennis courts
(one covered) and a football ground with race-course.
A lovely lake front promenade with BARs, restaurants
and little shops, the landing stage for boats
and hydrofoils.
