Ossuccio offers the visitors one of the most romantic
views of the lake, reclining as it does on the
bank while its church bell towers are reflected
in the waters: the very famous sail-shaped bell
tower of S.Giacomo and the Gothic bell tower of
S.Maria Maddalena. The narrow cobbled streets
open out into the charming wider areas between
the ancient stone houses or into unexpected openings
to the lake.
Opposite, the mysterious and very green Isola
Comacina, a strongbox that still remains virtually
unexplored, dating back to the turbulent and adventurous
medieval times. It is considered as one of the
most important archaeological sites of Lombardy.
Just above the inhabited part of Ossuccio one
enters the long 17th century avenue that climbs
in large steps up to the Sanctuary of Beata Vergine
del Soccorso Sacro Monte di Ossuccio, with its
14 votive chapels and more than 200 full size
terracotta statues. By climbing still higher,
after 2-hour walk, one reaches the Monastery of
S.Benedetto in Val Perlana, a jewel of romantic
art. |
